Dry Needling

Here at North Cork Physiotherapy and Acupuncture Clinic we offer Dry Needling treatment. This treatment has become hugely popular due to its excellent ad rapid results.  It is widely used in the field of sports medicine but its not just elite athletes that can benefit from this technique. Our physiotherapists undergo further training in this area so as to offer this treatment.

Dry Needling is the insertion of very fine Acupuncture needles directly into tight bands of muscle, often called trigger points.  These points are tight, tender knots within the muscle which cause, and contribute to pain within the body.  They can occur with strain, overuse or injury.  These points can cause pain locally or refer pain elsewhere, for example trigger points in and around the hip can cause pain down the leg.

We use the term dry as we do not put any liquid in the needle. The needles are very thin and so much easier to tolerate than other injections.

Although ‘dry needling’ uses the same needles as Acupuncture, it is not the same technique. Dry needling is based on western medicine and research.  MRI studies have shown that with this treatment the taut bands within muscles are released aiding normal pain free movement and a muscle less susceptible to injury or strain.

When receiving dry needling treatment you may experience a twitch within the muscles, people often describe it as a weird sensation rather than uncomfortable. The treated area may feel tender for up to 24 hours after treatment but we now have clients who actually request this technique due to its effectivness.
